Top 6 Best Places To Visit In Zanzibar

Offering an appealing blend of tropical beach experiences, Zanzibar has such a diverse coastline that there are plenty of unalike experiences across the main island, from a lively culture in the south to tranquil barefoot luxury in the north. There is plenty of attractions beyond splendid palm trees, and white beaches; we’ve collected the best places to visit in Zanzibar, and the best time to visit.

Start off with the main capital Stone Town that offer a series of welcoming experiences to away-from-the-crowds Islands that offer much more exclusive experiences – perfect for Zanzibar family holidays, honeymoon holiday trips and all kinds of adventure wanderers. We take a look at where to go in Pemba, Mafia, Chumbe and Mnemba below.

First, a look at the different best beaches on Zanzibar, where to go and what to expect at each:

1. Nungwi and Kendwa (North Coast) – suitable for travelers looking for a good time, Nungwi is home to the best beaches on the island with non-tidal turquoise waters and really powdery white sands – can sometimes be busy but the resorts continue to offer a more laid-back beach holiday vibe.

2. Pongwe (East) – Pongwe sits in a little concave bit of coast line which means the beach is glorious and when the tide isn’t completely in, it is seaweed free and very pretty. If relaxing is what you’re after, Pongwe is the perfect beach for your Zanzibar vacation. Not like the stretching beaches of the north, but a pocket of pure beachy gold, the area is less busy than the north.

3. Paje and Dongwe (East) – Although tidal, here sits some of our favourite luxury Zanzibar hotels. In terms of beach accommodation resorts – you won’t be let down. With its ideal lagoon, Paje is Zanzibar’s hottest kitesurfing destination, and many well-run kitesurfing schools offer lessons and rentals. The beach is wide and beautiful, but getting your feet wet is a little harder as the sea is further out and very tidal.

4. Matemwe (North-East) – Fishing, snorkelling, and diving are perfect. Slightly to the east of Nungwi, Matemwe is slightly tidal but still offers good value accommodation options. A quiet fishing community under gently swaying palms, classic palm-fringed beaches, white sand, and an emerald sea with private villas, perfect for a luxury vacation in Zanzibar.

5. Jambiani, South (South) East & West Zanzibar – a great place to visit for the best kite surfing experiences on the island as there are consistently good winds. You’ll find plenty of excellent midrange and budget accommodation available. However, our list of favourite hotels are without doubt up the road towards Paje and Dongwe. Also here, as you get further south, the beaches disappear.

We’ve selected a collection of the top 6 best places to visit in Zanzibar; every place here promises something for all tastes.

A country of wonder.
